How Many Hours of Sleep Do Adults Need?
According to recommendations from the American Academy of Sleep Medicine and the Sleep Research Society, adults should regularly get seven or more hours of sleep per night to support health. The National Sleep Foundation has similarly recommended approximately seven to nine hours for adults aged 18 to 64.
Older adults may require slightly different amounts of sleep. However, sleep needs are individual, and the most important factors include not only the number of hours slept but also the quality and regularity of sleep.
Sleeping less than seven hours regularly may lead to tiredness, reduced concentration, slower reactions and problems with mood. Long-term insufficient sleep has also been associated with several health problems.
Is Seven to Eight Hours of Continuous Sleep Better?
For most adults, getting the required amount of sleep in one main, uninterrupted sleep period is generally beneficial. During the night, the brain moves through different stages of sleep, including deep sleep and REM sleep.
Deep sleep is important for physical restoration, while REM sleep plays an important role in learning, memory and emotional processing. Repeated interruptions can disturb the normal progression of these sleep stages.
However, briefly waking up during the night is normal. The main concern is frequent or prolonged disruption that prevents a person from getting sufficient restorative sleep.
Therefore, the goal should not simply be to remain asleep for a specific number of hours. Good-quality, reasonably continuous sleep is also important.

Can We Recover Lost Sleep on Weekends?
Many people sleep less during the working week and try to compensate by sleeping much longer on weekends. Although additional sleep may help a person feel less tired, research suggests that weekend catch-up sleep may not completely reverse the effects of repeated sleep deprivation.
This means that regularly getting sufficient sleep is generally better than repeatedly sleeping too little and trying to recover later.
The Role of Morning Light
Morning light is another important factor in maintaining a healthy sleep schedule. Exposure to bright light during the day helps strengthen the body's biological rhythm. This can support daytime alertness and help the body prepare for sleep later.
A regular routine that includes daytime light exposure, consistent wake-up times and sufficient time for sleep can help support the natural sleep-wake cycle.

Sleeping from 10 PM to 6 AM is not automatically better than sleeping from 12 AM to 8 AM if both schedules provide sufficient, good-quality sleep and fit your body clock. However, constantly changing your bedtime and wake-up time—such as sleeping at 11 PM one night and 3 AM the next—can disturb your body clock. Research and expert consensus support consistent sleep and wake timing for health and performance.
