Health Minister Reviews NEET UG Counselling Preparations
Union Health Minister J.P. Nadda on Tuesday reviewed the preparedness for the upcoming NEET UG Counselling 2026. During the review meeting, officials assessed the implementation of new technology-driven reforms designed to simplify the counselling process for lakhs of MBBS and BDS aspirants across the country.
The government stated that these changes aim to make admissions more transparent, efficient, and convenient for students.
One-Time Physical Reporting Introduced
One of the biggest changes this year is the one-time physical reporting system.
After seat allotment, candidates will choose one of two options online:
Freeze: Candidates satisfied with their allotted seat must visit the allotted institute once to complete document verification and pay the admission fee.
Float: Candidates seeking a better seat in later rounds can complete admission formalities online without visiting the institute immediately.
This means students opting for the Float option can continue participating in future counselling rounds while keeping their allotted seat provisionally reserved.
Upgrade Option Available Till Round 3
The seat upgradation facility will remain available until the third round of counselling.
Once Round 3 concludes, candidates who have secured seats must report physically to their allotted colleges for:
Original document verification
Admission fee payment
Completion of institutional formalities
The revised system ensures that students need to visit the institute only once during the counselling process, reducing unnecessary travel and expenses.
Online Resignation Facility Added
Another major reform introduced this year is the online resignation feature.
Candidates who wish to surrender their allotted seat, wherever permitted under counselling rules, can now submit their resignation directly through the MCC Counselling Portal. In most cases, they will no longer need to visit the allotted college physically unless specifically instructed by the Medical Counselling Committee (MCC).
More Transparency Through Digital Verification
The counselling process will also become more streamlined through several digital initiatives, including:
Pre-filled candidate information received from the National Testing Agency (NTA)
Online verification of uploaded documents
Seat matrix validation by the National Medical Commission (NMC)
Verification by participating medical institutions
These measures are expected to reduce delays and improve the accuracy of admissions.
Better Accessibility for PwBD Candidates
The Ministry has also announced additional measures to improve accessibility for Persons with Benchmark Disabilities (PwBD), making the counselling process more inclusive and easier to navigate.
Fully Online Registration for NRI Candidates
For the first time, the entire admission process for the NRI category has been digitised.
Eligible NRI candidates will now:
Register through the online counselling portal
Upload all required documents digitally
Undergo online document verification by designated verification officers
This replaces the earlier practice of sending documents via email, making the process faster, more transparent, and easier to track.
