New Delhi: A major political showdown unfolded in the national capital on Tuesday as Congress leader and Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi led a sit-in protest near Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s official residence. The demonstration, organised by the Congress party, was held to protest against the alleged police action on students demanding justice over the NEET examination controversy.
Rahul Gandhi was accompanied by Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, several Members of Parliament, and senior party leaders. The leaders marched towards the Prime Minister’s residence and staged a protest, accusing the Central government of ignoring students' concerns and suppressing peaceful demonstrations.
Speaking during the protest, Rahul Gandhi alleged that the government had failed to answer important questions related to the examination issue and was avoiding a proper discussion in Parliament. He said the protest was meant to stand with students who, according to the Congress, were treated unfairly during recent demonstrations.
AAP Launches Sharp Attack
While the protest was aimed at the BJP-led Central government, it also triggered criticism from the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP). The party accused both the BJP and Congress of playing "political theatre" and questioned how Congress leaders were allowed to protest so close to the Prime Minister’s residence.
AAP MP Sanjay Singh claimed that the Congress protest appeared to be part of a "BJP-Congress partnership," alleging that both parties were working in a way that distracted attention from the real issues affecting students. The Congress strongly rejected these allegations, insisting that its protest was solely to seek justice for students and hold the government accountable.
Government Calls for Dialogue
During the protest, Union Minister of State in the Prime Minister’s Office Jitendra Singh met Rahul Gandhi and urged him to end the demonstration. According to the minister, the government was prepared to discuss the matter in Parliament.
However, after the meeting, Jitendra Singh alleged that Rahul Gandhi was more interested in confrontation than discussion. He claimed the Congress leader kept changing his demands instead of participating in constructive dialogue.
Police Detain Congress Leaders
As the protest continued, Delhi Police intervened and detained Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, Mallikarjun Kharge, and several other Congress leaders before removing them from the protest site. The Congress condemned the police action, calling it an attempt to silence the Opposition and suppress democratic protests.
Political Battle Intensifies
The protest has further intensified the political battle between the BJP and the Congress, with AAP adding another dimension by targeting both national parties. While Congress says it is fighting for students' rights and demanding accountability, the BJP accuses the Opposition of creating unnecessary confrontation for political gains. Meanwhile, AAP continues to question the intentions of both parties.
With Parliament in session and the examination controversy continuing to dominate political discussions, the issue is expected to remain one of the biggest flashpoints in national politics over the coming days.
